Summary

As Marat's siege engine bores through the Tower, erupting inside ringdoms and leaving chaos in its wake, Senlin can do nothing but observe the mayhem from inside the belly of the beast。 Caught in a charade, Senlin desperately tries to sabotage the rampaging Hod King, even as Marat's objective grows increasingly clear。 The leader of the zealots is bound for the Sphinx's lair and the unimaginable power it contains。

In the city under glass at the Tower's summit, Adam discovers a utopia where everyone inexplicably knows the details of his past。 As Adam unravels the mystery of his fame, he soon discovers the crowning ringdom conceals a much darker secret。

Aboard the State of Art, Edith and her crew adjust to the reality that Voleta has awoken from death changed。 She seems to share more in common with the Red Hand now than her former self。 While Edith wars for the soul of the young woman, a greater crisis looms: They will have to face Marat on unequal footing and with Senlin caught in the crossfire。

And when the Bridge of Babel is finally opened, and the Brick Layer's true ambition revealed, neither they nor the Tower will ever be the same again。

The incredible final book in the phenomenon fantasy series described as "future classics" follows one man's dangerous journey through a labyrinthine world and the mysteries he uncovers along the way (Los Angeles Times)。

4。5 stars!A great conclusion to a beloved series。 Mr。 Bancroft created such an original and imaginative story that would undeniably leave a mark in the fantasy fiction genre for many years。 I received an early advanced copy of this book from the publisher for review, and I’m so blessed to have read this book before it’s publication date。 Thank you Orbit! The only thing I didn’t like about this book was the beginning。 The first part of the book was super slow, and although I understand that everyt 4。5 stars!A great conclusion to a beloved series。 Mr。 Bancroft created such an original and imaginative story that would undeniably leave a mark in the fantasy fiction genre for many years。 I received an early advanced copy of this book from the publisher for review, and I’m so blessed to have read this book before it’s publication date。 Thank you Orbit! The only thing I didn’t like about this book was the beginning。 The first part of the book was super slow, and although I understand that everything about it was necessary to the plot, I felt like it was too long and provided too many details that could’ve been shortened。Finishing the first part, the second and third parts of the book were more exciting and thrilling。 I was literally on edge, wondering how everything would end。 The stakes were much higher as Senlin and the crew fight for the survival of the Tower。 This book had me pondering and wanting for more, to the point where I have to try and digest everything that was happening。 It was so imaginative and creative, I really wished it provided us illustrations to help with all the imagery。 Edith, Voleta, Iren, and Byron definitely stole the plot, and I’m glad that we had more adventures with them on this final book。Overall, the series was very well done! Never in my life have I highlighted so many words and sentences in books before, and I’ll definitely be using this one as my reference when I write my own book。 The pacing and execution were great, the plot so well-organized, and the fighting scenes in the end were enthralling…I really worried about the characters’ fate。 I didn’t want any of them to die!The ending felt incomplete, but it was necessary, and I wouldn’t have it any other way。 It pushed the realness of human emotions and reminds us that the future can be so uncertain。 I really did not expect the sci-fi elements to it, what happened to the zenith of the Tower, and provided us with more stories to ponder later on; I sense a hint of a sequel to this series in the future, but I could be wrong。 To me, however, the ending provided a great conclusion to the characters and more growth for their future!Very well done。 I will read anything that Mr Josiah Bancroft will write in the future。 Highly recommend this series。 。。。more

More like 4。5 stars。Josiah Bancroft’s prose and character work were unsurprisingly fantastic in this final book。 The action and tension were balanced perfectly, and there were multiple moments when I cried, gasped, and (internally) cheered。I’m still processing—and am admittedly conflicted about—the ending。

Thank you, Josiah Bancroft, for a (mostly) stunning end to a stunning ride。 And thank you, Netgalley, for the ARC for a reader who has only actually reviewed about four books in his life - when I make it big as a critic, I'll send y'all a dozen or so donuts。 None from Changing Tides, though - they're a little expensive。Let me start by saying that I have never anticipated the ending of a series more in my lifetime。 I picked up the Books of Babel series around the release of The Hod King - the la Thank you, Josiah Bancroft, for a (mostly) stunning end to a stunning ride。 And thank you, Netgalley, for the ARC for a reader who has only actually reviewed about four books in his life - when I make it big as a critic, I'll send y'all a dozen or so donuts。 None from Changing Tides, though - they're a little expensive。Let me start by saying that I have never anticipated the ending of a series more in my lifetime。 I picked up the Books of Babel series around the release of The Hod King - the last time I'd been that engrossed with a fantasy series was Pullmans Dark Materials and that was YEARS ago。 Suffice to say I've been watching the release of Fall of Babel like a hawk。 The excitement was palpable, the expectations extremely lofty。Fall of Babel represents what SEEMS like a notable shift in tone for the series。 The first three books were ominous, distressing at times - I won't get into spoilers, but The Tower felt gritty and almost low fantasy。 For better or worse, some of that grit has been put aside for Fall of Babel in favor of a most fantastical sort of Studio Ghibli vibe - the set pieces are more ambitious, the characters more triumphant (sometimes)。 Fall of Babel is the last book in the series, so that may affect things, but Bancroft seems to have less interest in the suffering of Stone Cloud's crew than in past iterations。 Personally it wasn't as much of a vibe for me (I like grittier fantasy) but judging by its merits, its a beautiful and magical ending to a great series。The ending is。。。 something。 It's really something。 To wax vague, it has a sort of deux ex machina seasoning from a meta perspective (i。e。, Bancroft couldn't quite close the loop of his own worldbuilding), however it took absolutely nothing away from the book for me as the handling of last minute revelations, the introduction of The Tower as a completed function, and the promise of future adventure with the series was more than enough to satisfy any qualms I may have had about unexplained (or poorly explained) worldbuilding elements。 In regards to the characters, the book carries an abundance of endings; some are happy, some sad, some bittersweet。 I particularly liked how Bancroft handled the relationship between (view spoiler)[ Senlin and Marya。 (hide spoiler)]。 That is to say, I certainly didn't like it。 But it was VERY well handled and mature, and what I would expect out of any good writer in their attempts to get to the heart of what makes a person tick and avoid emotional platitudes。There are two genuine problems I had with this book that avoided a 5 star rating。First, I very much did not enjoy Adam's POV/ section for this book。 The story was fine, but the execution felt jilted and weirdly paced (view spoiler)[。 I think the series would REALLY benefit from a better blending of POVs - I know its a little cliché with fantasy, but the melding of different characters stories in with each tends to make each POV seems better paced (Senlin's section was shorter, for example, but it being broken up made it seem fuller)。 The other, and this is really the only objective complaint I can make - the book needs a passover with an editor (if it had one already, it needs another)。 A few spelling errors and VERY strange wordings graced the novel, and there were a number of lines that were just garish。 Maybe he was being funny? But there were some of dialogue lines and descriptions in the book that really did not feel like they were written by the same author that came up with this quote:“Mirrors are not so honest as one might think。 They can be mugged at, bargained with, and one can always ferret out a flattering angle。 Really, there is nothing like the expression of a long-lost friend to reflect the honest state of your affairs。”So, with that in mind:Pros:Excellent proseFantastic finish to the seriesVERY original worldbuilding and fantasygood characterization and arc handlingMixed:Shift in writing tone The lack of a "close loop" within the world's own logic - I feel like I had more questions at the end than at the beginningCons:Adam's POV (first section of the novel)Poor editing, occasional rough grammar/ spellingThe occasional very BAD bit of proseFall of Babel was overall a satisfying end to the series。 I'd be happy to go back and reread, and will definitely do so someday。 Still my favorite fantasy series!4/5 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

A lengthy but worthy finale to Bancroft's fantastic high fantasy series 'The Books of Babel'。 As always, it's difficult to review a later book in a series if you want to stay spoiler-free。 The story stays cohesive throughout, interweaving the characters' viewpoints better than in the last volume。 Bancroft's writing is strong, his imagination and creativity shine through, and he does a great job giving us interesting answers to the questions raised in previous books。 The final 100+ pages are a wi A lengthy but worthy finale to Bancroft's fantastic high fantasy series 'The Books of Babel'。 As always, it's difficult to review a later book in a series if you want to stay spoiler-free。 The story stays cohesive throughout, interweaving the characters' viewpoints better than in the last volume。 Bancroft's writing is strong, his imagination and creativity shine through, and he does a great job giving us interesting answers to the questions raised in previous books。 The final 100+ pages are a wild ride and I love where Bancroft took the ending。 The pacing dragged in a few places, which isn't ideal in a book this long (more editing!), but other than that I really liked this finale。 If you're a fan of high fantasy, really imaginative world-building, and complex characters, you really need to pick up this series! I'm really sad to be done with this book, but it was a very satisfying conclusion to a terrific series! The Fall of Babel is a satisfying ending to a spectacular series, but is better read back-to-back for it to have a better impact。I read the previous novel, The Hod King, back in 2019 when it was first published and have since forgotten most of what happened。 I read some spoiler-filled reviews and the summary at the beginning of The Fall of Babel, but it wasn’t enough。 This series is one I would recommend reading back-to-back or at least without a significant amount of time in between each novel The Fall of Babel is a satisfying ending to a spectacular series, but is better read back-to-back for it to have a better impact。I read the previous novel, The Hod King, back in 2019 when it was first published and have since forgotten most of what happened。 I read some spoiler-filled reviews and the summary at the beginning of The Fall of Babel, but it wasn’t enough。 This series is one I would recommend reading back-to-back or at least without a significant amount of time in between each novel。 The characters are at the heart of this story and having forgotten key details, I missed out on emotional moments throughoutThe Fall of Babel。Bancroft’s writing is as flawlessly lyrical as in his previous novels。 As I mentioned in my review of The Hod King, each sentence, paragraph, and chapter are meticulously written to weave together an adventure tale that sheds light on more serious topics like, slavery, abuse, the disenfranchisement of a people, and the mistreatment of women。One slight criticism I have of The Fall of Babel is the lack of Senlin in the novel。 The Fall of Babel is told from multiple POVs, which isn’t a surprise considering all the characters who have been introduced and promoted to main characters。 However, Senlin has always been and will always be my favourite so to see so little of him was slightly disappointing。The ending of The Fall of Babel was unexpected and satisfying。 Bancroft ended his series while also leaving the door open for future novels or a spinoff series。Overall, The Fall of Babel is a fantastic conclusion to The Books of Babel series。 This series is full of eccentric characters, mystery and intrigue, and adventure all while touching on more serious topics in ways that feel meaningful。***I received an arc from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

4。25/5The Fall of Babel by Josiah Bancroft is a fitting end to a brilliant series First of all huge thanks to the author and publishers for accepting my request in Netgalley and it goes without saying that this review is my unbiased opinion。Quick Summary: The Fall of Babel is an answer to all the questions raised throughout the series。。。。 What is the purpose of this tower ? Where is Adam ? Who is Sphinx and Brick layer ? and most important of them all Will Senlin reunite with his wife ?WHAT WORKED FOR ME IN THIS BOOK:Prose: Like the previous works by Josiah Bancroft, the prose in this book were pure brilliant。 He outdone himself。Answers: As the author says in the beginning of this book。 All the questions raised in the previous books were answered。 Most of the reveals delivers the impact the plot requires。Final Act: Everything comes together in the last 100 pages to make an explosive finale that will make you feel extremely happy that you stick with this series。WHAT DIDN'T WORKED FOR ME IN THIS BOOK:I felt that the pacing was quite slow in some parts。 As a result it didn't quite held my attention here and there。Another nitpick is that there's just very little of our favourite Headmaster。 I'm not saying there's barely anything of Senlin。 But his page time is somewhat lesser than other characters and it affected me since I'm a Senlin simp 😅。 Probably wouldn't affect other's reading experience。FINAL WORD:Josiah Bancroft definitely stuck the landing。 The Fall of Babel effectively concludes The Books of Babel series。 。。。more

the worldWhat I find fascinating about this series is just how expansive it is。 The first book is told solely through Tom Senlin’s (3rd person) perspective and follows a rather linear progression of events。 We go from point a to point b and so on。 There are occasional flashbacks, but for the most part it’s an excellently linear story filled with great, descriptive writing and characters。 However, as the series progresses, we start to understand more about the Tower and see it through the perspec the worldWhat I find fascinating about this series is just how expansive it is。 The first book is told solely through Tom Senlin’s (3rd person) perspective and follows a rather linear progression of events。 We go from point a to point b and so on。 There are occasional flashbacks, but for the most part it’s an excellently linear story filled with great, descriptive writing and characters。 However, as the series progresses, we start to understand more about the Tower and see it through the perspectives of other characters。 And as our understanding of the Tower grows, so too does our bewilderment of it。 In The Fall of Babel, the ringdoms and structure are pretty much all known。 Yet there’s one question that pops up: “What’s the actual purpose? Is it really just a trap? Is it a vacation spot that went wrong? A place to start over?” All of these things can be true, and none of them can be true。 It all depends on the person and how they arrived to the Tower and how they acted under the various circumstances。We learn little about the world outside of the Tower, but that’s not the point。 It’s there。 It exists。 But the Tower is a world unto itself。 As stated just above, by the time we’ve gotten to the final book we know the basics of most everything。 And yet somehow there’s still that little bit that we weren’t aware of。 Specifically, we finally get to explore the top of the Tower。 This is where the book opens, with a large section from Adam’s perspective。 It’s pretty fun seeing him explore this ringdom that’s been a mystery even to him。 And it’s also rewarding to finally learn why his eye was taken as payment back in one of the lower ringdoms。charactersWe meet a variety of characters throughout the series。 Some start as villains but become allies。 Some start as villains and remain villains。 Two things remain true in the philosophy of the series (okay wow, that sounds deeper than it actually is): 1) Anyone is capable of a change of heart if they put the work into it, while also accepting that people are not obligated to forgive and/or forget。 2) The most unlikely of things or people can cause major changes。 These are shown throughout virtually all of the characters。 The Senlin of the last book is not the same as the Senlin of the first。Specifically in The Fall of Babel, we dive into a lot of minds。 What I found interesting from this was the underlying implication that no one needs to be an enigma。 In the first book, we hear of different, mysterious sounding people: The Red Hand, the Arm of the Sphinx, the Sphinx, and so on。 They have this inhuman quality to them that makes them larger than life。 Yet in the last book, we’re reading from these characters’ points of view。 (Well, not the Sphinx, but the Sphinx is demystified。) And they’re just people。 People with pasts who found their way to the Tower。 People who are trying to right past wrongs or attempting to navigate feelings for each other。 Literally everyone is just faking it。 This last book in the series firmly cements the fact that these characters are just people。 Incredible, fascinating people。 But they are not indestructible forces。writing & structureThe Fall of Babel—much like its predecessors—is told in a very descriptive style。 It really immerses you into the world。 It’s one of those books where you feel like you’re actually there。 Now, this book is long。 However, the writing absolutely helps the pacing flow at a steady rate。 It’s descriptive but knows when to move along。 I really appreciated that the book didn’t just feel like one 600+ page climax。The overall structure is a rather nonlinear one。 Different perspectives will start at different times。 I didn’t find it difficult to follow, but it is something to be aware of when reading。Oh and of course, the chapter epigraphs are always a delight。overallWell, I feel again that I’ve said nothing in many words。 This book was a joy to read。 Does it answer all of the questions from the series? No。 It answers a lot, though。 Does it raise more questions that aren’t answered? Yes。 And I love that。 It’s incredibly open-ended。 While this might bug some readers, I thought the book did a great job of making it open-ended while still feeling like…well…an ending。 We ascended the Tower, and it was breathtaking。(I received an ARC from the publisher。 Thank you。) 。。。more

wow。 i cant believe i am here and that the ending of the series has finally arrived。 its definitely a lot to process。i will say that with books #2 and #3, i was worried the story had lost its way。 but im glad this conclusion finally brings the story back to where it all began - senlin reuniting with his wife。 im also glad to see the things that annoyed me about book #3 - the formatting and lack of senlin - are fixed in this final installment。 all of the character POVs are integrated throughout, wow。 i cant believe i am here and that the ending of the series has finally arrived。 its definitely a lot to process。i will say that with books #2 and #3, i was worried the story had lost its way。 but im glad this conclusion finally brings the story back to where it all began - senlin reuniting with his wife。 im also glad to see the things that annoyed me about book #3 - the formatting and lack of senlin - are fixed in this final installment。 all of the character POVs are integrated throughout, which makes the story feel more cohesive and progress more smoothly。 it also allows the characters to show up more consistently, rather than just appear only for their POV section and then never be seen for the rest of the book。 so the narrative definitely improved and, with it, so did the story and characters。and the ending to this is one i think will be surprising to most readers, as it was to me。 with a title like ‘the fall of babel,’ it isnt hard to get a certain idea of how things are supposed to play out, but i found JBs ending to be completely unexpected。 especially as it leaves rooms for additional books/possible companion series。 all in all, i think this is a very satisfying ending to a long-awaited conclusion。 if you havent already, i highly recommend reading the first book, ‘senlin ascends,’ as its a modern work of wonder。a massive thanks to orbit books for the ARC! ↠ 3。5 stars 。。。more
